The Top 5 Pubs/Clubs for the Young & the Restless in Romford
Reviewed by Jessica Croker

So, you’re all dressed up and ready to party and even though Romford appears to be the epicentre of all things ‘chav’, there are a few hidden gems that may blow your mind but not your budget.

The Goose – most likely to start your night off ‘merry’

This pub looks like nothing special from the outside and apart from the cheap drinks this is probably true. With doubles and mixers for £2.39, you can’t go far wrong. There’s a cute beer garden out back with benches and heaters, making a summer night here well spent. Seats can be hard to find so don’t get there too late and beware during the holidays, with uni students back, prepare to queue.

Pacific Edge – most likely to get you hot and sweaty

This place screams decadence, rebellion and all things in between, with its deliciously dark dance floor and thrash-metal hotspot upstairs. Edge is fairly small, with 2 floors inside but don’t let this fool you. This place is small and mighty! There is a great vibe here with an eclectic music taste that will blow your mind. Friday’s the night the magic happens, so settle in and let the rock-tastic beats wash over you. Apply extra deodorant, you will need it.

The Opium Lounge – most likely to get you dancing on a podium

Liberally adorned with Buddha statues, this place is pretty funky, and although slightly off the main strip, it is well worth the trek. With Thursday nights set up for the younger generation, the drinks are marginally cheaper and the dancing more hyped up. The music is full of underground/lesser-known bands to impress even the most up-to-date music connoisseur. The dance floor is surrounded by ‘chill-out pods’ so you can have a breather and get swiftly back to your shapes.

One Three One – most likely to get you singing along

This place is pretty darned cheesy, the kind of place you’re likely to hear the ‘Grease’ medley and ‘Like a Virgin’ all under one roof. However, with free entry and two floors of music to choose from this bar cum club is always heaving with people. Just bare in mind that drinks aren’t cheap but if you want to dance the night away to ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’, then this is the place for you.

The Bitter End – most likely to meet a rising star

This pub could be described as a dive, and from the look of the dirty, tattooed, pierced frequenters of this location perhaps that’s true. But the most important thing to note about this venue is the list of really great bands they book here, well worth the jaunt into an otherwise dull, dingy pub. And with fairly cheap booze and a pretty sweet pool table, The Bitter End is a good choice for a more mellow drink in Romford.
