Good morning everyone.

An old teacher of mine once told me that to be young and wise was foolish, yet to be old and foolish was even more so. Now that I have my first grey hairs his words have suddenly come back to me. It doesn't yet feel time for me to develop a penchant for strange knitwear but it probably is the time to start doing those foolish, fun things in a wiser way. So here I am, ready to plunge into the unknown and exciting with a stained notepad to prove my legitimacy.

At the risk of sounding like a fidgety interview candidate I am going to tell you a little about myself. I'm a 27 year old from South Birmingham and my recent work history has involved rangering in various local parks and events, working for city museums and substantial time in many casinos and bookmakers. Hopefully that is enough information to give you an idea of the areas I could contribute to, but not enough to encourage anyone out there with a burning desire to discover what my liver tastes like.

I have no real writing experience and as such feel some trepidation in putting my rambling screeds out into the public domain. I fear it will expose my woeful lack of attention during school, although I was once praised by a teacher for my complex description of dust. It is probably best to disregard the opinion of anyone with a handlebar moustache that big though.

I hope I can contribute where needed and start to build up a portfolio of work. Professional editing and constructive criticism is also very appealing. I have a fresh pack of smokes and a copy of "My First Book of English Grammar" to hand and stand (read: slouched in such a way as to cause major back problems in later life) ready. Of course, if you are wearing your favourite cardigan and stroking your facial hair as you are reading this I’ll find my own way out. I’m sure the field of dust analysis will welcome a lost brother.

hi james

welcome to the board.

what we're really after here at myvillage is LOCAL content from the people in the know i.e. you :)

guides to eating/drinking/clubbing/arts in your area would go down a treat, or perhaps you know of some little known, but simply brilliant community project / local issue that deserves a shout out.

plus, we're always on the look out for local reviews, which can be posted live to the relevant site.

keep an eye on our 'articles wanted section' for free tix and promotional parties, or alternatively post your ideas to the 'make a suggestion' area.

best wishes and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for the welcome. I have been having a flick through the Birmingham pages and cannot see anything about the numerous casinos we have here. As an ex-croupier I was wondering if a "beginner’s guide to casinos" or something along those lines would be of interest given the recent surge in poker interest, the film "21", etc? If not, how about some short reviews? I know there isn't a category for this but they all feature bars and restaurants to some degree if you'd prefer to steer clear of the gambling aspect.

hi there

sounds good to me - would be good to have a bit of humour in the thing, with nods towards all the super casinos and online gambling, then yeah, a croupier's inside guide to surviving the tables, or summit such like...

to give it a bit of a geographical slant, perhaps a quick low down on what's available in your area.

brilliant - about 500 words.

look forward to reading it.

best wishes

Thanks pickles/laura. I’ll get onto it and see what I can rustle up.
