MyVillage is a private company with sales of 5 million pounds a year - but does not pay its writers.
Sure, you get clips online - which you could get on any number of websites or blogs - some of which pay.
'Who knows where it might lead' the FAQ asks - but MyVillage, do you have any examples of writers who got hot gigs from doing your bidding?
All in all, the incentives for writing for this site are not very high. |

Well hello.

A private company with sales of 5million? Your figures are... well, interesting as well, to say the least! Please get the facts right first before posting (like all good writers do). MyVillage does pay its fulltime writers, I can assure you myself and my editors do get paid. This however, is a contributors site, that yes, is un-paid. We never tried to say otherwise! In fact, I have repeated it several times, we do not wish to disillusion anyone. And what is more, this is voluntary. And everyone has to start somewhere.

Not many websites or blogs have over 3million readers, do they?

Who knows where it may lead and you ask for examples? Our Network Editor Laura, for a start, may like to comment here, she came to us as a contributor through an older version of our messageboard.
As for 'doing our bidding' no one has to do anything, we are not asking anyone to write for us that doesn't want to!

A quick word...
As Mandy said I did work for MyVillage as a contributor, completely unpaid, before I was offered a full time (and fully paid) job. Previous to that I stood in a Loughborough shopping centre and asked people what they thought of their local wheelie bin scheme also for nothing but the glory(!).
To have any hope of becoming a Journalist you have to get published and most places aren't going to even look at the work of an unknown writer let alone pay them per word as they do an established freelancer. Offering to do free contributions, as people are doing here, or taking work experience at newspapers and magazines builds up a portfolio and makes sure your name gets in to print.
Ask anyone who works at The Guardian or Times, for the BBC or Vogue and I'd bet my daughter's left arm that barely any of them got where they are today without doing unpaid work somewhere along the line. I think you'll find that most Journalists do the job out of the love of writing rather than for the financial benefits - if we wanted the dosh we'd stack shelves in Sainsburys ;)
So good luck to the budding writers looking to get online and to the established Journalists who want to put their stamp on their local area, we're glad to have you all on board and we won't be holding public executions is you refuse to do our bidding. |
